The Relkogroup: What Is In A Name?

Some of you will know that our name comes from the remarkable racehorse, Relko, who won several titles in his three year career. Many of you however, will probably be unaware of Relko's story or why we chose him to be our namesake. That is why we have written this fun little blog, to share Relko's story with you so you can understand why his strength, character and reputation were such an inspiration to the RelkoGroup. Read on to learn more about this racing hero and our namesake.

Who Was Relko?

Owned by Francois Dupre, Relko was a French thoroughbred racehorse who later became a sire. He was an attractive bay horse, standing at just over 16.1 hands tall with distinctive markings of a white stripe and three white socks. His racing career lasted from 1962 to 1964, in which time he ran 13 races and won nine. His big claim to fame though was his win at the 1963 Epsom Derby.

What Made Relko So Special?

Relko was a special horse for many reasons but his ability to deliver a fantastic race every time made his career one of the best remembered. As a two year old in 1962, he won the Prix Gladiator and the Prix Isard. He also placed 2nd and 4th in races that year and in the last race of the year, he finished 2nd in the Prix Thomas Bryon.

In 1963 he was a more experienced three year old who went on to have the best year of his career. He won the Prix de Guicje, the Poule d'Essai des Poulains and made it to the Epsom Derby. Ridden by 21 year old Yves Saint-Martin at the Epsom Derby (29th May 1963), he was the 5/1 Favourite against 26 runners. He didn't disappoint. He moved up to take the lead just three furlongs away from the finish line and ended up winning by six lengths. After this memorable victory, Relko went on to win the Prix Royal Oak in superb style that September.

In 1964 he raced as a seasoned four year old and won all three of his first starts; the Prix Ganay, Coronation Cup and Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. In the Autumn though, he retired with an injury and became a sough-after sire instead, thanks to his fantastic reputation.

Why Was Relko Such An Inspiration To The RelkoGroup?

Relko was described by the Glasgow Herald as "a strong, compact and perfectly balanced" horse (source: Wikipedia). This was by no means the only complimentary description of Relko, who managed to win over racing fans and professionals alike.
